What is propane?

Propane is a straight-chain alkane, with the carbon atoms structured C-C-C. The middle carbon shares one bond with each carbons and has two hydrogen atoms. The end carbons share a bond with the central carbon atom and are each bonded with three hydrogen atoms. In terms of individual carbon atoms, propane can be expressed as CH3CH2CH3 or C3H8.

Why should I choose propane?

Propane produces 43% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than using an equivalent amount of electricity generated from the U.S. grid. Propane-fueled technologies produce fewer nitrogen oxide (NOx) and sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions than technologies fueled by gasoline, and diesel.

Why should I choose propane over electric?

Propane is CLEAN & GREEN! Both the Clean Air Act of 1990 and the National Energy Policy Act of 1992 approve propane as a clean-burning alternative fuel. It’s nontoxic, doesn’t spill, and will not pollute groundwater, which makes it a safe fuel for underground storage. Additionally, propane’s carbon footprint is relatively small compared to other fuels and it produces less emissions.

Is propane an eco-friendly fuel?

Yes, because it vaporizes when exposed to air, propane does not harm soil and has negligible effects on the ozone. Similarly, propane poses no hazard to drinking water or marine ecosystems. Propane is not mined like battery materials or extracted like oil. It is primarily manufactured from natural gas as a by-product of methane purification.

Transporting your gas grill cylinders

  • Never leave your cylinder indoors or in a hot car.
  • Make sure the tank is transported upright.
  • Make sure the valve is plugged.

What should I do if I think I smell propane?

No Flames or Sparks!
Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or fire.

Leave the area immediately!
Get everyone our of the building or area where you suspect gas leaking.

Shut off the gas.
Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank, if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).

Report the leak.
From a neighbor’s home or other nearby building away from the gas leak, call your propane retailer right away. If you can’t reach your propane retailer, call 911 or your local fire department.

Do not return to the building or area until your propane retailer determines that it is safe to do so.

Get your system checked.
Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, your propane retailer or a qualified service technician mush check your entire system to ensure that it is leak-free.
